Whilst not part of routine scanning, if you or your doctor are concerned about anything later in your pregnancy, you can book in for a Growth and Reassurance Scan from 24 weeks.
During the Growth and Reassurance Scan, the sonographer will once again check the baby’s heartbeat and anatomy. She will measure the baby to monitor how it is growing. She will also assess how the baby is moving, where it is positioned, some major blood vessels, the umbilical cord, amniotic fluid, placenta and your cervix. There is a lot we can document at this age.
If the baby is in a good position we may be able to obtain a few 3D images. Successful 3D/4D imaging is very dependent on the position of the baby and it must have amniotic fluid in front of the region being scanned in order to obtain a clear image. The sonographer will discuss the ultrasound findings with you and tell you if everything appears normal or if there are any concerning features. You will receive a small printed image of your baby and all of your images as jpg files on a CD. An official report will be emailed to you, and your referring doctor if applicable, later in the day.
This ultrasound will generally take 20-30 minutes.
